Why players search for a "Subnautica 2 keycode"
The habit comes from the first game. Subnautica 1 had fixed four-digit codes you typed into Aurora keypads — 1454 for the Cargo Bay, 1869 for Cabin No. 1, 6483 for Lab Access, 2679 for the Captain's Quarters. Those numbers were the same in every playthrough, so they got passed around as a list. Subnautica 2 dropped that system. There is nothing to type into the Tadpole Pens door, and no list of numbers exists to find. Four outlets we checked agree on this.
How to open the Tadpole Pens door
- Unlock Heat Tolerance first. This is a prerequisite, not a nice-to-have — without the Heat Tolerance adaptation the lava-pipe route to the black box will kill you. Clear the Angel Comb near Wander's black box to get it.
- Head southwest of the Tadpole Pens into the Geothermal area, also called the Hot Caves.
- Descend to 310 metres and find the supply crate holding Zip's black box.
- Interact with it. The kuraltai access key transfers into your PDA automatically — there is no item to carry back and no code to read off it.
- Return to the door. The key activates the door button. Press it and the Pens open.

Getting to 310 metres in one piece
The Tadpole vehicle bottoms out at 250m, so park it around 240-250m, drop a Beacon on it, and swim the last stretch with an Air Bladder and an Air Tank. Craft a Rebreather if you have one available. It is a small cave — go straight down, take the black box, ascend. Do not sightsee on the way.
If the quest does not update
Check that you actually interacted with the crate rather than swimming past it, and check your PDA for the kuraltai access key. If the key is not there, reload and interact again. If NoA has not sent the waypoint, exit and re-enter the area, save and reload, or move further away — the dialogue sometimes queues behind other voice lines. The Signals tab is worth checking too.
If you are stuck a step earlier, at the Angel Comb rather than the door, check what build you are on before troubleshooting anything else. Angel Combs failing to open was a real progression-blocking bug, and the developer fixed it in Hotfix 4 on July 14, 2026. On a pre-hotfix build no amount of retrying will help; on a current build the comb should open normally.
Any other locked doors?
No other locked-door or locker keypad codes are documented for the current Early Access build. If you find a door that will not open, it is a quest gate or an unfinished area, not a code you are missing.
Patch history checked — and a correction to our own
We re-checked the patch notes on August 14, 2026 for anything that would change door access. Nothing has. But the re-check turned up two errors in the patch history this page previously carried, and both are worth fixing because one of them bears directly on step one of the walkthrough above.
- Early Access 1.1, "Adaptive Measures", shipped July 8, 2026 — not July 17. We had the wrong date. The developer's own update post and the Xbox patch-note coverage both put it at July 8.
- Hotfix 4 shipped July 14, 2026, and we were not carrying it at all. This matters more than a date slip: the developer's own hotfix post states it fixed Angel Combs not opening for some players, which was blocking progression. The Angel Comb is exactly the gate you clear to unlock Heat Tolerance, which is the prerequisite for the route below. If you bounced off this quest before mid-July and concluded the door was bugged or that you were missing a code, the fix landed on July 14 — go back and try again on a current build.
Neither patch touched door access, keypads or the Tadpole depth limit, and Hotfix 3 remains correct at June 1, 2026. Nothing relevant shipped between our previous check and this one.
One August event, and why it does not change this page
An opt-in Experimental branch — also called the Public Test Branch — launched for Subnautica 2 on Steam and Xbox on August 12, 2026, confirmed by the developer's own announcement and by Xbox's. It is a distribution channel, not content: it ships no new mechanics, no door changes and no keypad system, and the developer has said it will not update daily the way the first game's experimental branch did. Two practical warnings if you opt in: saves are not compatible between the Experimental and main branches, so you cannot move a character across, and builds there are more likely to break. None of that alters the route below. If a future Experimental build ever does add a keypad system, this page changes; until then, the quest route is the only way in.
Sources checked August 14, 2026: Unknown Worlds' own Hotfix 4 post (developer's own stated date: July 14, 2026 — first-party, and the basis for the correction above), Unknown Worlds' Experimental branch announcement and Xbox Wire (both August 12, 2026), the publisher's own help-centre article on the Experimental branch, plus the guides we cited previously and re-confirmed as unchanged: PC Gamer, GamesRadar and Game Rant (article dated May 14, 2026). All still describe the same Heat Tolerance to Hot Caves to 310m sequence, and none describes a typed code for the Tadpole Pens.
Update Rule
We do not mark a code as active just because another page says it is active. The page records what was checked, when it was checked, and what players should verify next.
